Rosette Nebula

Description

This series of three paintings is based on a nebula motif. I find nebulas very beautiful. They are so bright and colourful and ful of texture. I choose three different nebulas: Orion, Draco, and Rosette. The reason I choose these three is because each nebula looked very different from the others, and each lent its self to a different painting technique.

The Rosette nebula was atmospheric yet very busy. I used glazing for this painting but used impasto to build up the busier parts of the painting.

This is one of my few attempts at abstract work. I feel very challenged when I try to create abstract artwork. This is another reason I choose to use nebulas as my motif. Nebulas appear to be abstract images to begin with. I had hoped by choosing an already abstracted image, it would be easier for me to try to make an abstract painting. I feel this was successful because the paintings do look abstract. Yet the images reference to something else, namely space, which helped me relate to the paintings.

Someone mentioned to me that looking at images of space makes them feel a sense of wonderment, or being lost in the vastness of it. I hope these paintings convey a sense of wonder and vastness. I also hope that people will get lost in these paintings, as I often get lost looking at the stars.
